Day Trip To Girona

Girona, Spain caught me by surprise. This quiet city north of Barcelona offers a great getaway for a day trip. I did not expect to fall in love with this beautiful city but I couldn't help it. From the quiet cobblestone streets to the colorful landscape, Girona is a treasure. If you are spending any time in Spain, I recommend taking a day out to visit Girona, Spain.

How to Get To Girona

The best route is via the high-speed train through AVE/Avent from Barcelona to Girona. The train leaves from Barcelona Sants station and takes 38 minutes to travel to Girona. Tickets range from 13-19 euros depending on rush hour times. The high-speed train is very lux with spacious leather seats and large windows to see the countryside as you glide by at 200 km/hr.You could also take the local train which takes a little less than 1.5 hours.

If you are a Games of Thrones fan, you will recognize this iconic landmark, which was featured in many scenes during season 6 of Game of Thrones. The Girona Cathedral is a 5-minute hike from Independence Square. Fair warning, parts of the journey are uphill along cobblestone, so wear comfortable shoes. The Girona Cathedral is absolutely beautiful from every angle. Most people love to get shots in front of the cathedral on the steps.Make sure to walk around the side of the cathedral and explore the cathedral garden that is behind the cathedral through a stone walkway.

The Jewish Quarter is a very well preserved area where the Jewish population of Girona lived. It consists of winding, hilly cobblestone streets.Take a stroll back through the Jewish Quarter while traveling between the Girona Cathedral and the Eiffel Bridge. During your walk, you will pass by some quaint gift shops and cafes.

The Eiffel Bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel, who of course also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. This bridge is one of many that cross the Onyar River. The Eiffel Bridge's architecture is truly photo worthy. A peek through the crisscrossed beams also offers views of the colorful buildings flanking the river.

What to Eat In Girona

So I have this little problem, I can't resist sweets. If you read my previous post on NYC eats, then you know I have quite the sweet tooth. So, of course, I have to share some great places to satisfy your sweet tooth in Girona.

When strolling through the Jewish Quarter, I couldn't resist this cute dessert shop. Here you can choose from an array of cakes, cupcakes, and nut brittles.

I LOVE gelato. I consider myself a gelato connoisseur, mostly because I consume so much of it. Rocambolesc offers not only unique gelato flavors but also cool popsicles in crazy shapes. The reason I had to make a special stop at this gelateria is for the Panet. This slice of heaven is composed of a brioche bun cut in half and stuffed with gelato and assorted toppings, then baked into a warm gooey treat.

Girona is worth the trip, which takes less than an hour on a high-speed train from Barcelona. It is a true gem and is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. I hope this inspires you to take a day trip to Girona.
